yule/jolablot

midwinter sacrifice

In Ynglinga Saga, this is the second blot Odin makes law. This sacrifice falls at the halfway point in the winter half of the year.

There is common debate among followers about when Yule should be celebrated. Without mixing in other European practices, and looking to the Sagas, we can see that the solstice is not the correct answer, and neither is the Christian Christmas. In the Saga of Hakon the Good, we see that Yule or "Midwinter" was held somewhere in mid-January to February. This was a few weeks, if not a month AFTER the solstice and Christmas. Hakon the Good, a Christian King, had midwinter moved to align with Christmas celebrations, but kept the traditions such as sacrificing and feasting to keep the peace with his people. We also see within this Saga that midwinter celebrations were three nights long, full of feasting and drinking.

This is a sacrifice for a good harvest, so Thor and Freyr are given sacrifice. Jolnir is one of many names for Odin, so it would not be unwise to sacrifice to him as well.

Yule is held on the first full moon, after the first new moon, following the winter solstice.

DISABLOT

SACRIFICE TO THE DISIR

Disablot is mainly attested for in Swedish culture. This was and is, a sacrifice to the powerful Disir. These beings are directly tied to our fate, protection, family, and well-being. These are the Norns, female ancestors, Freyja, and Valkyries to name a few. There is some debate on when Disablot is held as well, however from Swedish sources we see that it was at the very least celebrated at the edge of spring there. For Iceland and Norway, it is entirely possible that they held it closer to winter nights. No sources, however, mention it being held during Yule.

Disablot is held on the second full moon after Midwinter.

SIGRBLOT

VICTORY SACRIFICE

This is the third blot in Ynglinga Saga that Odin made law. This sacrifice is for victories during battles and challenges in the coming summer.

Modern time battles are far and few between compared to our ancestors. If you have military friends or family who will be deploying, going to combat, or anything of the sort, this is the blot where we ask for the blessings of the gods and spirits, to give them power in the coming fight.

For those who are not in the military, or have military affiliation, this is a good time to ask for blessings from the gods and spirits, not necessarily for victory in battle, but tools to overcome the year's challenges. Tools such as knowledge, wisdom, power, and guidance.

Sigrblot is held on the third full moon after Midwinter.

einherjar blot

memorial sacrifice

This is a sacrifice that we as, a Kindred, hold in line with Memorial Day. Warriors have always been, and always will be, an important part of our culture. Without warriors, our ancestors would not have found new lands, found great trading routes, and would not have been able to defend attacking forces.

In modern times, being that we are an American Kindred, without warriors willing to stand up to tyranny, we wouldn't have an independent country today. We wouldn't have been able to help defeat the Nazi's in WWII or defend ourselves after an attack from Japan. Politics aside, as we remain neutral as an organization, we hold our warriors with high regard, and honor those who have fallen in the ways that we know how, by sacrifice.

This blot is held on the same date as Memorial Day, and we sacrifice to the gods that keep our fallen warriors, Odin, Freyja, and Hel.

midsummer feast

gathering at midsummer

While there is nothing explicitly stating there was a midsummer blot, there is evidence that there was at least a midsummer gathering or celebration. In Heimskringla, the Saga of King Olaf Tryggvason, he moves "summer feasts" closer to the solstice to align with Saint John's Eve/Saint John's Day. This, is where most people gain the idea that midsummer should be on the solstice. However, as we can see with Midwinter, it was celebrated a month or so after the solstice and was moved closer by the Christian King. Logical and objective thinking shows that midsummer would have been held in July, more than likely on the full moon, and this is where Sweden holds it today!

Midsummer is held on the full moon in July.

ASATRU DAY

DAY TO HONOR THE FAITH AND THOSE AROUND US

This is a day held by Nordiska Asa-Samfundet in Sweden, and we have asked and gained permission to celebrate it with them. Nine is a very important number in the faith. Nine nights Odin hung from Yggdrasil, sacrificed himself to himself. The nine realms make up our wondrous cosmos, held together by Yggdrasil. Therefore, every nine years, on 9/9, we will hold a large gathering. It is a day of reflection on those who we have around us, appreciation for all we have, and appreciation and attention shown to the wondrous cosmology and faith we have.

THE NEXT LARGE GATHERING WILL BE IN 2032

HAUSTBLOT/
WINTER NIGHTS

HARVEST SACRIFICE

This is not only the beginning of the winter half of the year, but is the beginning of a new year as well according to the Norse Lunar calendar. It fell in the month of Haustmanudur or "Harvest Month".

This blot is an important festival to our faith, as it celebrates the current bountiful harvest, the culmination of all the hard work put into agriculture, and celebrates the new year as well!

This blot also pays honor and respect to the spirits of the land and house. These spirits play a vital role in helping make sure crops, livestock, and the land as a whole are taken care of.

Haustblot takes place three full moons BEFORE midwinter and lasts for three nights.

ALFABLOT

ELVEN SACRIFICE

Known as the Elf Sacrifice, Alfablot is most described in Austrfaravisur. Within this text we see that this is the one blot that was done behind closed doors, and family internal. It also states that it is led by the woman of the household. It was so family internal, in fact, that they would not abide by their rules of hospitality on this night, turning away wanderers at their door.

There is a strong connection throughout the sagas, between elves and ancestors. It has been said and seen many times that ancestors can become elves when they pass. So, this blot is tied heavily to ancestor worship. In other lore, elves are neither inherently good nor bad. They can be mischievous, harmful, helpful, and even healing towards humans. In Kormak's Saga it is said that giving the elves a feast at their mound, a feast of cattle blood, will aid in healing. So aside from ancestor worship, it is wise to offer to the elves to gain their favor or at least keep the mischief away.

Alfablot falls on the full moon after Haustblot/Winter Nights.
